To make sense of Schatzberg’s call to arms, we need to pay close attention to how he defines the 2 ‘sharply diverging traditions’ of speaking about know-how. Across the 2 millennial span of his history, Schatzberg places commentators in one or other of the camps. On the one facet is the ‘instrumental approach’, which adopts the language of means and ends and which thereby ‘portrays technology as a slim technical rationality, uncreative and devoid of values’. It is hard to consider a follow which doesn't sooner or later involve materiality either in creation or use. Is there actually nothing we are ready to add to sharpen the meaning of follow so that it captures one thing particularly technological? Finally, while determinists are sometimes instrumentalists, it is not the case that each one instrumentalists are determinists.
